The cadooz Reconstruction - Our Options

21.09.2021

It's almost time for the big reconstruction at cadooz.

Our long journey from having the first thought about the change to finally getting it done.

Part 2:  Our Options: Where Next for cadooz?

Do we stay in the office complex where we originally set up cadooz in 2000 with its original 3 rooms, steadily renting more space there, or do we change location to achieve our goals?

Option A: Stay and Reconstruct

We have steadily built up our rental space, and as a result our office winds its way through the 8th floor of an H-shaped building in Barmbek-Süd. But we are restricted by fixed fire sections, narrow areas and a lot of corridor space.

Option B: Move

We had been putting some serious thought into this in 2019. However, large office spaces that are already geared up for new work are in demand right now. There were some options in outlying districts, though—Othmarschen, for example—that were not completely outrageous in terms of price.

So Our First Decision Was Made: We Stay.

Why? Because in 2019, 95% of our cadoozies came into the office every day. A pragmatically-minded cadoozie also took the trouble to map out how employees were spread among Hamburg’s neighborhoods.

The result was that if we moved, 70% of our cadoozies would face significantly longer commutes.

We do not want to alienate our employees. So this is not an option. We must never forget that the reconstruction is for and because of our cadoozies. Our goal is to create an environment that makes everyone’s job easier, so a longer commute clearly gets in the way here.

We also reflected on the advantages we already have and would lose: We have a gym, a post office, a supermarket, a hairdresser, several restaurants and a kiosk in the Alstercity building ... directly in the building. We don’t even get our feet wet when it rains. Jarrestrasse with all its culinary diversity and a large park at the Osterbek canal are right on our doorstep. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

In the following post, you'll find out more about our planning processes and how the Covid pandemic steered us in a new direction. Stay tuned.
